What We Do

Answering the Call, One Horse at a Time

Established in 2005, Sable Haven Horses is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Thoroughbred adoption and placement program devoted to the long-term welfare of retired racehorses. Our mission is to provide these magnificent animals with the opportunity to discover a new calling beyond the racetrack.

Each horse that enters our program receives the individualized care they deserve. After a period of rest and careful evaluation, they are paired with experienced trainers who help guide them into successful second careers. A financial support system ensures that this transition is handled responsibly and with the highest standards of horsemanship.

Our approach centers on working closely with the racing community to focus efforts where they’re needed most. By fostering meaningful connections with industry professionals and horse lovers alike, we create a pathway for each horse to thrive in their next chapter.

🐎 Our Unique Approach at Sable Haven Horses

At Sable Haven Horses, one of our core goals is to fill the gaps that may exist in traditional equine rescue and rehoming programs. While every initiative serves a valuable purpose, our focus is specifically designed to champion Thoroughbred horses—providing the individualized care, support, and training they need to thrive beyond the racetrack.

What sets our program apart is our ability to offer specialized services that many others may not:

  • We accept uncastrated colts, provide professional castration services, and gradually integrate them into general herd life.

  • We work with horses that have had minimal handling, including yearlings and retired broodmares that were never trained to ride.

  • Our team is experienced in starting the retraining process for retired racehorses and helping them discover their ideal role within the general riding community.

Beyond care and training, we are deeply committed to education. We aim to bridge the understanding between the racing world and the general equestrian community. We educate riders about the potential of the Thoroughbred racehorse and also work with racehorse owners to ensure they understand the transition needs of a horse entering a new lifestyle. We’ve found that horses given proper handling during the first 3–6 months after racing have a significantly higher success rate in long-term placements. This reduces failed matches and limits the cycle of horses returning to rescue programs.

Over time, we’ve developed a training program that shortens the transition from racehorse to riding partner, allowing more horses to succeed in their next careers. We are incredibly proud of the progress made by our horses, the dedication of our adopters, and the generosity of our donor community. Without your support — and the help of our amazing volunteers — our work would not be possible.

Sable Haven Horses always welcomes volunteers with a passion for helping retired Thoroughbreds and experience in fundraising, outreach, or care. If you’re interested in supporting our mission, please email us at info@horseadoptionnetwork.com and include “DONATION” or “VOLUNTEER” in the subject line.

Together, we’re changing lives — one horse at a time.
