Meet Frodo – A Smart, Sensitive Young Gelding With a Bright Future
Frodo is an inquisitive and personable gelding who is currently growing into both his body and his confidence. Around the farm, he leads politely in a regular halter and lead, though he can become a bit forward in unfamiliar or stimulating environments. For those situations, we recommend using a rope halter or chain shank for extra guidance.
He is just learning to stand in the cross-ties and continues to make great progress with supervision. While still settling into new routines, he can startle if someone moves too quickly around him—especially during grooming or tacking. Taking it slow, letting him explore his surroundings, and giving him time to build trust has made a big difference in helping him relax.
Frodo currently lives outside with a group of geldings and gets along well with a variety of personalities. He started his training barefoot, but due to recent wet conditions and softened hooves, he now wears front shoes. As he’s going through a noticeable growth spurt and is a bit butt-high, he may need some extra nutrition during this phase to support his developing frame.
Under saddle, Frodo shows impressive poise and calmness. In fact, he’s more confident under saddle than on the ground. We give him time to explore the arena and walk around jumps before asking for work, and he settles quickly. He is responsive to aids, comfortable to ride, and has a lovely, natural work ethic. He is currently in light work while he continues to grow.
Frodo does best with a confident handler who can help him navigate new situations. He tends to mirror the behavior of his pasture mates—if he’s turned out with a hard-to-catch horse, he may act similarly, but if he’s with a bold and friendly horse, that’s the Frodo you’ll get too. Once settled into a routine and bonded with his people, he is affectionate and truly enjoys attention.
Frodo retired with a partially paralyzed throat, which causes a slight respiratory noise. However, this is not expected to impact his ability to enjoy a new career.
